Have you ever thought what a great thing it would be to meet people based on a shared interest such as music? Or maybe find a date because someone else enjoys a similiar band that you do? Well, London based social networking site Tastebuds has already thought of that. When I first read about this, I thought, “Why has this not been introduced before?” The idea behind it is great and clearly others have become hooked to it at an alarming rate.
Recently, Tastebuds was able to get $600,000 from Black Ocean, who build and invest in starting up technology. The money will be used to launch mobile apps, grow it’s developing team and to formally launch in the United States. They are also planning features to connect members offline through gigs, festivals and music meetups, which will build on it’s existing online to offline social networking proposition. I can only imagine what an amazing takeoff this UK based company will have when they launch in the US! As it says in the article, “It was originally started as a dating site that focused on music as a way of matching prospective dates. Half of it’s users have never used a dating site before. Tastebuds could only go so far, since dating online has very competitive spaces with high acquisition costs.”
They have gone way past the dating services and the way the site is designed, allows people to meet others in whatever capacity possible. On Tastebuds, you search for your favorite bands and/or artists then you can import data from your Facebook music related “likes”. The articles mentions how you can, “state if you are looking for a date or just looking for like minded people. You can ‘like’ users so that their Tastebuds status updates show up in your news feed.” It would be nice to see what music gigs your friends are going to right? Tastebuds allows you to do just that. Tastebuds if free to join, although they have been experimenting with features like “incognito mode”, which hides your online status and allows you to browse anonymously.
