Geocaching: The New Age Scavenger Hunt

Published by admin under geocaching

As we mention before, Geocaching is a decade old hobby now that has many people using GPS technology to hunt down the coordinates of the cache find. This technology has provided many people a new hobby that well relates to Metal Detectoring.

In some cases metal detectors are even used to the “treasure” called the cache. Players of this fun hobby get these coordinates from The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site online, and once they have read clues and coordinates for a certain cache location in their area, they go out and seek the prize.

From coins to even dollar bills found, it is the finder’s duty to replace the cache location with another prize so that the cycle keeps going on and leaves the fun for others as well! If you are not experienced or familiar to the hobby, then I suggest looking for a local geocaching class that are offered almost in every state. It can be a great experience Geocaching with your family as well as a fun way to spend your weekend.

Where can you find explorable areas? The answer to finding older sites is “Research!”

Published by admin under Tips

Calling all Metal Detectorist – These are some valuable tips if you are running out of places to explore for treasure.

1-Old Maps - can be found in local libraries, local history books, they show old roads, abandoned railroad stations, many times school buildings and other points of interest that either no longer exist, or people have forgotten about.

Field of Gettysburg, July 1st, 2nd & 3rd, 1863 Prepared by T. Ditterline

2-Old Newspapers contain a wealth of information on almost every page Stories about holiday celebration on the town square park (May no longer exists) Carnival arriving in town (where did they set up?) and much more information.

3-Old Property Tax Records show where older houses, farms, service stations, interstate bus stops, taverns etc.. once stood. Lots of old coins to be found.

4-School Records not only tell you where schools once stood. Find all the roads and paths that students took to get to school. Find out exactly where the building or buildings stood. School playground areas, where outside lunch benches were… etc.

5-Local Historical Societies are a great resource containing valuable information on dozens of older happenings of your town from it’s very beginnings up till today… A valuable resource not to be overlooked.

6-Local Museums usually have displays of historical interest as well as many books on the areas history. Spend time with anyone that works in the museum, they generally are part “Historian.” Listen to what they can tell you.

7-Senior Citizens are a walking history of your town or city. Take the time to visit the Senior Citizen Homes and events. Make friends with those folks and listen to the stories they can tell.

8-Old Police Reports can pinpoint events that can turn into a “Treasure” spot. Robberies of lake front homes many times ended with the thief throwing his loot into the lake if he was about to be captured. Police calls to businesses or homes that are empty lots right now.. etc.

9-Old Fire Department records can indicate where many building & properties once existed. Probably the best source for what once stood on now empty lots. Fire Departments also participated in many town activities such as picnics and parades. Where did the parades begin and end? Where were the picnics held?

10-Churches - church records will show where the earliest churches were established. Some no longer exist & were torn down or purchased for another business now on that spot. People spent time before and after church to picnic and join in many outdoor activities.

11-College(s) - start small and add more buildings from time to time. Lots of areas outside buildings, sports areas, student eating areas, picnic spots, etc. Colleges are also a depository of information about the towns and cities where they are located. Check the college library.

12-Library - we saved the best for last. No place has more information than the local library. .Check with the Librarian who can direct you to a wealth of information about your town. (Or any town if you want to search out sites in neighboring areas) Libraries are the main “Depository” of information of all kinds, many times having a number of items discussed above, “old maps, old books, old records, etc”. Get a library card, it will really pay off!

Let us know in the comments area if this helps out!

L.R. Doty Shipwreck Discovered 300ft Below Lakes Surface

Published by admin under Finds, History, News, Photos, Stories

The Milwaukee cargo steamship L.R. Doty has been discovered after 112 years of wondering where it has sunk. The L.R. Doty is of great value because the 300 foot long ship was the largest wooden vessel, and the whereabouts of this ship were not known.

Brendon Baillod, the President of Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Association spent 20 years of his life researching about the ship, and had remembered a local fisherman reporting that his nets were clashing against a strong object in the shorelines in 1991. He backtracked and took his diving crew down to explore the possibilities of the L.R. Doty being found. Jitka Hanakova, the 33 year old diver who was a member of the research team told the media that the divers spotted the ship as soon as they landed on the floor of the lake. He said that the ship has been well preserved due to the cold and fresh water of the lake.

It was said that the ship was carrying cargo of corns way back from South Chicago and was headed towards Ontario in 1898 when it sank into the depths of water. When the ship sunk down it was pretty young, just five years old. Besides the 17 crew members out of which none survived the storm, the ship was also carrying two cats namely Dewey and Watson. The corpses of the ship’s crew are still said to present inside the boiler room which is said to be the safest place where one might have gone for shelter.

Remnants of the Gold Rush found

Published by admin under Events, Finds, Gold, History

Nevada City, CA - Permits have been sought after with this new amazing discovery that led the San Fransisco business man, Jim Sanders into new wealth. Over 160 years has passed since the California Gold Rush, after one evening of metal detecting in his family-owned property, he found a 9 pound gold nugget then following with an 8oz nugget and 10oz.

Gold nuggets usually are reported to come in smaller sizes, and since the Gold Rush this is a very large discovery. Sanders believes there is more where that came from after surveying the land.

Local jeweler Terry Mohr hadn’t seen the nugget, but was impressed nonetheless at the reported size, which he said would make it worth well over $100,000.

“I’ve been doing gold nugget jewelry for over 30 years and I don’t know as I’ve heard of a nugget that size being found in this area in all the time I’ve been involved,” Mohr said.

Looks like if you live near Nevada City, CA you should consider getting your serious Metal Detecting Gear on and head outside to see if you get lucky! Good luck and Happy Hunting :)

Farmer looks for hammer finds Roman Coins worth millions!

Published by admin under Blogs, Finds, Gold, Stories

So after surfing the web, I stumbled across this site with metal detecting finds which had an inspiring story where treasure was found without even trying! A British farmer lost his hammer in his crop fields one day. He refused to buy another to replace it and instead just borrowed his friend’s Metal Detector. After Searching his crops for his hammer, he came up with over 15,000 coins of various metals, including gold, as well as jewelry and statues.

The government bought these coins from him for £1.75 million which he split with his friend who let him borrow his metal detector. Wow! What an amazing find!

Published by admin under Finds, Gold, Stories

This gets me excited! Just to know that there are still treasures like this makes me want to pick up my detector and get to work. Listen to this amazing find from Zimbabwe below:

M. Raisi -
“It was my second day of searching using GPX-4500. I only searched a few moments after some of my guys had given up for the day, and hey I got a signal. Believe me, what I found, it was one big gold nugget weighing 14.5 ounces.

I’m grateful for this modern technology.”

Well, I have one foot out the door to get on a one way flight to Zimbabwe. Ha. Not really, but I am motivated to go out and search now.

Man finds two 14k rings with Excalibur II underwater.

Published by admin under Finds, Gold, Stories

Marty says,

“I recently purchased an Excalibur II and wanted to share with you a couple of my first finds with it. This is my third water machine and by far the best. I have only had the Excalibur II for a few weeks and have had some incredible luck. I got down to the beach after the holiday weekend and got not one but two 14k rings. The depth of this machine truly amazes me, I really like the fact that the Excalibur II ignores iron but will sound off on the good stuff right next to it. I think its going to be a great year!”

Hey folks, this is an awesome hobby. It gets you out in the fresh air while getting exercise and eventually finding your very own treasure on land or in the water. So go out there and give it a try. And if you’re in need of a detector make sure to visit Kellyco.

Vast Riches of Minerals found in Afghanistan!

Published by admin under Finds, Gold, News

I read this cool story recently in the New York Times that tells of an abundant treasure of minerals found. It just proves that there is plenty of treasure in the ground waiting to be discovered. So read the story below and then grab your metal detector or go buy one from Kellyco and go find your very own treasure.

“The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials.

The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium — are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.”

White’s MXT and 6×8 SEF Coil Finds Georgia Button at About 8″ Deep

Published by admin under Finds

Hey guys! I recently heard a pretty cool new treasure find story from Jimmy. He said, “Today was my first time out to go detecting in quite awhile. I have had the 6X8 SEF coil for my MXT from JW at Kellyco for several months and really have been itching to give it a try. I have played around in my home doing air test and it would hit a dime at 9″-the same as the stock coil! Today was the first day I felt like getting in the woods in quite awhile. I went back to one of my old spots and found this Georgia button at about 8″ deep. The 6X8 has good separation and depth in real ground. I haven’t tried the larger SEF, but for getting in the woods and bushes I think this is the best one. Now I can’t wait to go back.”
